Program Information

“Biotechnology is the performance and understanding of laboratory experiments. The experiments can be in medicine, food science, ecology, agriculture, industry, or forensics. The development of reasoning skills will help you prepare for tomorrow's workforce.” - Mrs. Wolfe

In the Biotechnology Tech Prep program, students will build upon their knowledge to explore uses for science. Biotechnology does not just cover one area. Students will perform experiments in agriculture, medicine, forensics, genetics, and many other areas.

In our state-of-the-art clinical facility, students perform hands-on lab experiments. These lab experiments are the result of student research, lectures, and reading assignments. Students are required to write-up their experiments using a standard method of reporting laboratory data. This helps to prepare them for their college science classes.

Biotechnology is a College Tech Prep program. To work in the Biotechnology field, education beyond high school is necessary. Many graduates of the Biotechnology Tech Prep program continue their education at Sinclair Community College to earn an Associate's degree or go on to earn a four-year degree in the field.

The Biotechnology Tech Prep program prepares students for jobs out of high school as a lab assistant, and with further college training students could be prepared for careers as a biologist, chemist, forensic scientist, biochemist, geneticist, clinical laboratory scientist, soil and water scientist, pharmacist, and a physician.
