“If a student wants to pursue a career in the Heavy Equipment field and the student takes the initiative, this program will jump start them into a field of growing demand, to be successful and make a good income at a young age!” - Mr. Kauffman

The MVCTC Heavy Equipment Operator program is designed for students to learn not only machine operations, but all aspects of the heavy equipment field. Students study safety in the Heavy Equipment and Construction field, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA )10 hour safety course, blue print reading, grade stake reading, surveying & land layout, basic welding & metal fabricating, commercial driver's license (CDL) preparation and preventive maintenance of equipment. Students completing this program should be well rounded to start a career as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

MVCTC Heavy Equipment Operator students start the program as juniors with safety and basic machine operations, in the MVCTC land lab. As students become more familiar with the basic machine operations they are divided up into groups (operators, surveyors, land layout & laborer), to work together to fine-tune their operator skills. When students become more proficient in the land lab, they will move on to projects either on campus (concrete preparation, grading, sub-surface drainage, road & parking lot preparation, snow removal, wetlands development, etc.), or off campus (ponds, foundations, grading, tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, and various types of site work). Students learn about different types of Heavy Equipment Operations completing these projects for local school districts, communities, park districts, non-profit organizations and local individuals.

After completing the MVCTC Heavy Equipment Operator program, students may obtain employment from area excavating companies ( Kelchner, D & M Excavating, Danis Corporation, Fryman and Kuck), surveyors or engineers (Woolpert), Government Agencies (Cities of Englewood, Germantown, New Lebanon, and Springboro, Darke County Road & Maintenance, Montgomery County Water & Sewer Department). Some students have gone on to become mechanics, truck drivers, forklift operators, and grade checkers.
