Director of Operations at Miami Valley Hospital South Honored as Friend of MVCTC 2016
Englewood, Ohio – The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) named Director of Operations at Miami Valley Hospital South, Cristlyn Johnston, as the recipient of the 2016 Friend of MVCTC Award. Johnston received the award at the 26th annual All Advisory Dinner held on Thursday, October 6, in the MVCTC Student Activity Center. MVCTC Superintendent, Dr. Nick Weldy, says, “This award is given each year to someone who is always supportive of our mission, our programs, and our students. Those nominated are the professionals who willingly give a tremendous amount of time and talent to ensure MVCTC has continued success”.
Johnston was nominated by the MVCTC Satellite Department for the award. She has been instrumental in the Project SEARCH program at Miami Valley Hospital South. Project SEARCH is an international program that teaches individuals with disabilities who are between the ages of 18 and 22 job skills by providing hands on internships throughout the hospital. Upon completion of the program every effort is made for each intern (student) to find competitive employment that matches his or her preferences, interests, needs, and strengths. Although it is not the expectation, Miami Valley Hospital South hired three Project SEARCH interns from last year’s class.
Teresa Rohrer, MVCTC Project SEARCH instructor, shared the following about Cristlyn’s support, “Her enthusiasm for Project SEARCH and each intern is contagious and has spread throughout all staff in the hospital. As the program is growing possible internship opportunities, different hospital departments are asking how they can be involved. The possible internship opportunity has grown by over 50% since the first internship rotation during 2014-15. Through Cristlyn’s support, Miami Valley Career Technology Center’s Project SEARCH program has formed a true partnership with Miami Valley Hospital South. She is actively involved in with the program, but above all, it’s the personal connection that Cristlyn makes with each intern and their family. She makes every effort to get to know each one of them. Cristlyn Johnston is a friend to MVCTC, Project SEARCH, and each individual who enters our program. Without her support we would not be able to provide this amazing program that truly makes a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities.”
The evening also included the 2016 MVCTC Hall of Fame ceremony, a district update by Dr. Weldy, and the opportunity for the 300 plus business partners to meet with MVCTC staff. During the program advisory committee meetings, business partners, employers, alumni, students and parents worked with the career technical instructors to guarantee what is being taught at MVCTC is what students will need to know to be successful in their chosen careers.
