Select Industries Corporation on Apprenticeship – Company Perspective

NOVEMBER 15, 2016 ~ Ohio Office of Workforce Transformation Blog

Select Industries Corporation employs 6 full-time apprentices and 4 pre-apprentices in their tool and die program and has local partnerships with Miami Valley Career Technology Center and Sinclair Community College to recruit talented apprentices. Thomas Hebb, Sensor Applications Manager and Apprenticeship Manager, shared how apprenticeship has worked for Select Industries:

What has apprenticeship meant for you and Select Industries Corporation?
We will be able to get more young people to train and replace the aging tooling workforce.

How are your apprentices contributing to your business (in terms of productivity, ROI)?
They are a great help. While they are learning, they relieve some of the workload off the older workers. They also lower the number of hours it takes to repair tools, and assist in engineering projects. We’ve seen an increase in our top line. Apprentices are very valuable.

What has surprised you most about hiring apprentices?
What surprised me most was the willingness of our young people to learn a skill without a degree.

Would you recommend apprenticeship programs to other businesses?
Highly recommend.

What’s the best way to attract more businesses to become Registered Apprenticeship sponsors?

Have them call other sponsors and visit their plants.

What else would you like to tell us about your experience?
I learn new things every day! It’s an exciting way to get our youth involved and into the workforce without them acquiring a ton of school debt.
