MVCTC Dental Assistant Team Wins Gold at SkillsUSA Regional Contest
Plain City, Ohio – Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) junior Dental Assistant students competed and won the Regional SkillsUSA Opening and Closing Team Contest on Saturday, February 16, Tolles Career & Technical Center in Plain City, Ohio. The team consisted of members Alina Brown (Huber Heights), Amanda Duffy (Carlisle), Jayla Hill (Vandalia-Butler), Taryn Kiracofe (Eaton), Maddyn McQueen (Twin Valley South), Brooklyn Murphy (Preble Shawnee), and Lindsey Westergerdes (Versailles).
MVCTC Dental Assistant instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor, Abigail Hartman, prepared the Opening and Closing Team last year that won the National SkillsUSA Contest and has put the time in with the new group of juniors to follow in their footsteps. Hartman, an alumnus of the MVCTC Dental program, has shared her passion for SkillsUSA with her students and the work has paid off.
Hartman shared, “Returning to MVCTC as the Dental Assisting instructor has been an honor. I love sharing my passion for dentistry and being with the students every day. My students continue to exceed my expectations in and outside of the classroom. They work hard to represent MVCTC, SkillsUSA, and HOSA and we are excited to continue to compete in the leadership and dental assisting competitions for years to come.”
According to the SkillsUSA website, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies contest is, “a teamwork and oral presentation contest that evaluates teams’ understanding of the symbolic representation of the colors and assembled parts of the SkillsUSA emblem. Each team includes seven registered members in the roles of president, vice president, parliamentarian, reporter, treasurer, secretary, and historian.”
The MVCTC team will next compete at the SkillsUSA Ohio Competition on April 16-17, 2019, in Columbus. The state contests bring over 5,000 competitors, business and industry partners, instructors, and vendors together in over 100 contests in all 16 Career Pathways to showcase Career and Technical Education in Ohio.
