Miami Valley CTC and Wright Patterson AFB Partner to Provide School-to-Work Opportunities to High School Students
WPAFB, Ohio – Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) partnered with Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) during the 2019-2020 school year to allow ten seniors to work in the skilled trades field with the 88th Civil Engineering Squadron at the Base. Through the MVCTC School-to-Work program, coordinated by Robert Ewry, the students are afforded this excellent opportunity. When the students graduate in the Spring of 2020, they will have the chance to apply for full-time employment at WPAFB.
MVCTC and members of Wright Patterson’s leadership worked for nearly a year to develop this unique partnership. The result of this planning was high school students expanding their career-technical knowledge of skilled trades while earning a good wage. The MVCTC School-to-Work program also allows WPAFB to meet the mission of maintaining its infrastructure.
WBAFB Civilian Leader, 88 CES, Ron Lee, P.E., stated, “The MVCTC program has been outstanding so far for us, injecting energy and enthusiasm into our workforce – accomplishing quality work for us, and benefitting the students with quality work experience.”
The MVCTC School-to-Work Program is a unique opportunity for career technical students to enter a highly skilled occupation their senior year. Students receive on-the-job training with a sponsoring employer and related technical instruction at MVCTC for the skills needed to succeed in their career field. The MVCTC School-to-Work students work two weeks’ full time and return to school two weeks’ full time and then alternate the entire senior year with this schedule. While on campus at MVCTC the two weeks, the students are completing their academic requirements to graduate from high school. The program allows them to earn high school credits, career technical training, real-life work experience, and a paycheck, while still in high school. The 2019-2020 school year is the 25th year for the MVCTC School-to-Work program.

- Zane Wullenweber (Welding student from Miamisburg)
