IMPORANT END OF THE YEAR INFORMATION

Parents and Guardians,

As we near the fourth quarter, I have quite a bit of important information to share with you regarding the end of the school year, Prom, and Senior Recognition. I am providing this information to each of you as soon as possible with the understanding that it is subject to change if a new health order is issued by Governor DeWine or Public Health Dayton and Montgomery County. 

End of the Year

First, a high school diploma is the most important credential that a student earns in high school. MVCTC has been monitoring the progress of all of our students and has worked closely with those who may be in jeopardy of not graduating. Thankfully, this is a very small number of students at this point in time. With that being said, if a student is failing a required academic course, MVCTC will schedule time during their on-campus career-technical lab so that the student can work directly with the instructor who teaches the course(s) he/she needs to pass. I will be sharing a video with students next week during their lunch time to encourage them to work towards a strong finish to the school year. I will also let the students know that we are here to assist them if they are struggling with their assignments. They can contact a teacher, counselor or administrator if they have questions or need assistance because of a personal issue or other challenge. 

I have spoken with a number of parents and know that you are doing your best to encourage your child to keep up on their school work. I ask that you continue to support him/her in this endeavor and reach out to your child’s teacher and/or counselor if you have a concern. As we near the end of the school year, it becomes more of a challenge for both parents and teachers to get work turned in from some students. Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated!

As a reminder, you always have the ability to check on your child’s progress at MVCTC. If you visit www.mvctc.com and click on the ‘Parents’ tab at the top, you will see an option to login in to ProgressBook to see how your child is doing. If you do not remember your password or are having difficulties accessing ProgressBook, you can call (937) 854-6060. 

If your child is struggling with mental issues or you have noticed a significant change in mood or behaviors, feel free to contact MVCTC’s partner, Samaritan Behavioral Health, who can provide tele-therapy in lieu of in-person sessions. You may also email your child’s MVCTC school counselor or contact therapists, Jane Winch at jwinch@mvctc.com or Martha Harris at (937) 307-6064 or maharris@mvctc.com. In addition, Samaritan Behavioral and Montgomery County are utilizing the “my Strength” app to help students or staff overcome the challenges they may face. Second, Governor DeWine announced last week that if Ohio drops below 50 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people for a consistent two-week period, he would lift all state-wide health orders. Currently, because of the health orders that are in place requiring social distancing of six feet during lunch and our limited space due to the ongoing construction project, MVCTC has not been able to return to full face-to-face instruction. Since we will begin the fourth quarter on Monday, there is not much time left for this school year. Please know that if all of the health orders are lifted in a timely manner, the district will consider returning to full face-to-face instruction. This will only happen if we have a minimum of three full weeks of instruction remaining in the school year. Based on the information we have now, MVCTC will continue to be on the current blended learning schedule for the remainder of the year. If the health orders are lifted and there is enough time remaining in the school year, we will communicate any changes with our students, parents and stakeholders.

As a reminder, here are the important dates to remember as we wrap up this school year. These dates are based on continuing with the current blended learning schedule. If any adjustments are necessary, we will communicate them as soon as possible. 

End of Year Dates for Seniors

  • Wednesday, April 28 assignments distributed that are DUE on Tuesday, May 4(Adjusted workload to account for the slightly shorter week.) 
  • Tuesday May 4 - Last Day for Seniors on Campus
  • Friday, May 7 - Last day for seniors to submit assignments
  • Monday, May 10 through Friday, May 14 - Senior Work Experience

 

End of Year Dates for Juniors

  • Wednesday, May 5 assignments distributed that are DUE on Tuesday, May 18
  • Friday, May 14 - Last Day for Juniors on Campus
  • Tuesday, May 18 - Last day for juniors to submit assignments
     

MVCTC Prom

 

MVCTC’s Prom is another event that has been a struggle to plan but we are getting close to finalizing a path forward. Two days ago, I received guidance from the health department relating to Prom. Here is what I can share. At this point in time, we are planning on holding some form of a traditional Prom event. Due to the restrictions we face, there are a number of stipulations. We will be able to offer the opportunity to our junior and senior students, BUT tickets will be limited to ensure that we do not exceed capacity. MVCTC will host the event on two evenings, Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 from 8-11p on both nights. Friday will be for junior students only. Saturday will be for senior students only. This is the only way we can offer this opportunity to as many of our students as possible. It is very unlikely that much, if any,

food will be offered, but there will be plenty of bottled water. There will be

a junior Prom king and queen on Friday and a senior Prom king and queen on

Saturday. No outside guests will be allowed; this event will be for only MVCTC

Students. The district is working to make Prom available to our students at NO cost. The registration link for students will be available to students on Monday, March 15 via their MVCTC email. The link will close on Friday, March 26. No additional registrations will be accepted after Friday, March 26. Due to the limited capacity, tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis. Dancing will be allowed but students must remain masked the entire time. Those who choose not to stay masked will be required to leave the event. Finally, there are still many details that need to be worked out but I wanted to give you as much information as possible. Our goal is to offer as much of a ‘normal’ Prom experience as possible while still adhering to health department guidelines. 

 

Senior Recognition

 

An important event that happens annually is MVCTC’s Senior Recognition Ceremony. Due to health department restrictions imposed on our host for this event, Wright State University (WSU), our options are very limited this year. The district’s goal has been to prioritize a face-to-face ceremony. After reviewing the facts, the best way forward will be to hold the MVCTC Senior Recognition ceremony on Sunday, May 16. Please note this is a change from the original date of Friday, May 14. 

In order to meet the health department restrictions and be able to offer this experience to all seniors who are eligible to participate and to allow guests to attend, we will need to hold two sessions on Sunday, May 16. Students will be assigned to one of the sessions depending on their career-technical lab. Due to the limited amount of capacity available for this ceremony, parents will not be able to choose which session their child will participate in and the district will not move students from one session to another. Once a time is assigned for each lab, it will be communicated at a future date so families can plan accordingly. The first session will be from 1-2:30 p.m. and the second session will be from 5-6:30 p.m. The time between the sessions is required so that WSU can clean and sterilize the space before the next group arrives. This is the only option that will allow us to have students, staff and parents at each session. Please note that only four tickets will be available per graduate. Each of the four ticket holders will be required to sit together in a designated location during the ceremony. More information will be forthcoming in regards to how tickets will be dispersed. We are fortunate to have the ability to hold this ceremony face-to-face and are thankful that Wright State University has continued to work closely with us through this process so that the parents and senior students will have this experience.
