MVCTC Aviation Student Wins National SkillsUSA Competition
Englewood, Ohio -- Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) had four students compete in the 51st annual National SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference. During the week, more than 6,000 outstanding career and technical education students—all state contest winners competed hands-on in over 100 different trade, technical, and leadership fields.
MVCTC Aviation Maintenance Technician student, Alexandria (Ali) Pompeii, won the National Aviation Maintenance Contest! Ali is the daughter of Mario and Barbara Pompeii of Dayton and is currently a senior at Northmont and MVCTC. According to the SkillsUSA National Website, www.SkillsUSA.org, the Aviation Maintenance Technology National Contest required, “contestants perform 12 tasks that represent the types of maintenance they will handle in the aircraft industry. The contest scope is consistent with the airframe and power plant mechanics certification guide published by the Federal Aviation Administration. Aviation maintenance is the only maintenance profession certified by the federal government.”
MVCTC Graphic Commercial Art student, Megan Miller, placed second in the National Advertising Design Contest! Megan is a 2015 Graduate of Wayne High School and MVCTC. She is the daughter of Paul and Cheryl Miller of Dayton. According to the SkillsUSA National Website, www.SkillsUSA.org, the Advertising Design National Contest, “Tests technical skills and creative aptitude just as though contestants worked for an ad agency. In addition to a written test, competitors will re-create a given advertisement on the computer. Competitors are judged on their accuracy, proficiency with industry standard software and ability to meet the given deadline. Contestants also compete in a creative portion of the competition. The creative portion involves the application of creative thinking and development of a design problem. Layout, drawing and illustration skills are used, as well as their ability to create vibrant, effective designs using the computer.”
MVCTC Class of 2015 Graduates, Rayna Huffman (Dixie) and Jesse Ly (Vandalia-Butler), also completed at the National Competition. Rayna placed fifth in the National Prepared Speech Contest and Jesse placed seventh in the National Photography Contest.
The MVCTC Dental Assistant Junior class was selected as the winner of the CareerSafe “National Youth Safety Video Contest” and won $7,500 for MVCTC. This award was presented at the beginning of the National SkillsUSA Conference.
Top student winners received gold, silver, and bronze medallions. Many also received prizes such as tools of their trade and/or scholarships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA Championships is the national-level competition for public high school and college/postsecondary students enrolled in career and technical education programs. SkillsUSA organizes this event, and it is considered the single greatest day of industry volunteerism in America annually at an estimated cost of more than $36 million. Each SkillsUSA Championships contestant is a state-level gold medalist.
Begun in 1967, the SkillsUSA Championships has grown from 54 competitors in three contests to more than 6,000 competitors in 100 hands-on skill and leadership contests this year. SkillsUSA adds contests to the SkillsUSA Championships to meet the demands of new and expanding occupations. SkillsUSA affiliated instructional programs represent 130 different occupational areas.
