Professional Development

  • Staff Development Committee:
    - 20 Staff members representing all departments
    - Meetings held five times per year
    - Plan and develop activities for in-services, course for credit, Project Trade, and other staff development activities
  • Discipline with Dignity Class:
    - Classes held after school January 18-March 16, 2002
    - Presenters: Mike Buchanan (Environmental Science Instructor_ and Tony Thomas (South Building Principal/Supervisor)
  • 11 MVCTC teachers participated
  • Ashland University offered graduate credit for 6 students interested

Slides 5-6:
Professional Development/Technology Training

  • Teaching and Learning with Microsoft Office
    - After school classes were held March 20-May 6
    - Met twice each week
    - Presenters: Randy Schmidt, MVCTC Technology Coordinator and Technology Department Staff
    - Objective: Incorporate technology in classroom with project based lessons that are compiled into portfolio

  • Microsoft Word Secretarial Training:
    - After school classes were held March 18-May 1
    - Met twice each week
    - Presenters: Kelly Haws (Legal Secretary Instructor and Kim Marburger (Director of Instructional Development Secretary)
    - 16 secretaries particpated in this training

Professional Development/Praxis Workshop:

  • Workshop held April 11, 2002
  • Presenter: Dr. Lowell Hedges
  • Preparing for the Praxis II Principles of Teaching and Learning test for teachers in their second year holding a 2 year Provisional Vocational License
  • Eleven participants including nine from outside school districts and two from MVCTC

Professional Development/S.E.N.G. (Secretarial Enrichment Network Group):

  • Secretaries meet monthly
  • Started in November, 2001
  • Meetings held after school from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Professional Development/Project Trade

  • 6 Staff members particpated in Project Trade to update their technical skills
  • They worked at a business or institution for 5 days during summer break
  • Participants received a stipend for the five days paid through Title VI Grant money
  • Participants were:
    - Greg Gilbert (Plumbing Instructor - Montgomery County Inspection Services
    - Christy Gouge (Animal Care Instructor) - Dayton South Veterinary Clinic
    - Kelly Kramer (Carpentry Instructor) - Larry Fourman Construction Excavating
    - Donita Massing (Printing Instructor) - C & O Printing
    - Arlene Studebaker (Multimedia Technician) - Heart to Honduras
    - Lou Warren (Adult HVAC Instructor) - Perfection

Professional Development/Substitute Teacher Workshop

  • Held August 6
  • 27 substitute teachers attended
  • Topics address:
    - Postive classroom management
    - Handling emergency issues
    - Safety Procedures
    - MVCTC program offerings
    - Technology Updates

Professional Development/Ohio FIRST Training

  • Ohio FIRST is the state developed program established for mentors and first year teachers
  • Program consists of 4 days of training for mentors.
  • Trainer for CTC: Rhonda Phillips, Professional Development Coordinator
  • 11 people participated (6 from MVCTC and 5 from other school districts)
  • MVCTC mentors in attendance were: Monica Bir, Julie Bains, Sharon McKenny, Debbie Stricker, Ron Watts and Andrew White

Professional Development/First Year Teacher & Mentor Workshops

  • 3 days in August were dedicated to helping prepare first year teachers
  • 5 mentors met August 15 to collaborate & prepare
  • Mentors spent 2 days working with new teachers, topics covered:
    - Preparing for the First Day
    - Classroom Management
    - Share Fair (experienced teachers shared programs/activities used in class)
    - Understanding School Environment (Ohio FIRST Event One)

Professional Development/New Employee Orientation:

  • One day new employee orientation held August 20
  • 17 Staff members participated in all day orientation
  • Activities included for the day included; staff member introduction, MVCTC program information, facility tour, school procedure and use of AESOP system

  • August 21 - Presentations by Dr. Boggess and other staff members
  • August 22 - Keynote Speaker, Wayne Ates - "The F.O.R.C.E."
  • August 23 - Staff work day

Wellness Commitee/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention

  • Dr. Clare Osborne presented a session on Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention
  • Derma Scan machine was on campus
    - 50 staff members participated in training session
    - 90 staff members used Derma Scan machine

Wellness Committee/Fitness Sessions

  • 20 satff members attended Fitness Sessions
  • Weight Watchers participants lost 276 pounds
  • "Top Health" wellness newsletters continue to be included in paycheck envelopes
  • Wellness Committee members participated in Wellness Conference
  • Wellness Goal for 2002-03: Focus on nutrition and physical activity to impact a broad variety of health issues including diabetes, cancer and general well-being for all staff

Wellness Committee/Planned Activities

  • The Wellness Program will encourage all staff to walk for the MVCTC levy and to track the miles walked
  • A contest will be held to see who can guess how many miles we collectively walk for the levy
  • Staff are encouraged to use their pedometers to calculate miles walked
  • A new resource, "Wellness Parlay" has been established for staff and is available to staff on GroupWise emai
  • Community collaboration with Northmont Optimists
  • Hipple Cancer Research Center is sponsoring a Cancer Prevention program: "Living Healthy: You Can Do It" on September 25, 2002 (MVCTC adult and secondary medical students will also participate in this event that is open to the public.)
  • Fitness/Cross Training for stall will be offered in October
  • A podiatrist will speak to staff about foot health in November
  • In December, the committee will focus on healthy food choices and possibly create a staff cookbook
  • In January, health screening will available on the in-service day

Slides 24-28:
North Central Association (NCA)

  • This cycle for NCA school improvement process ends in 2003-2004. We are in the second year of the implementation phase of the process.
  • Goals for 2002-2003:
    - Continue to collect and analyze data to track progress and guide improvement efforts
    - Data from previous years will be shared with staff
    - Continue Mentor/Mentee program
    - Survey results from last year's participants indicate the program needs fine tuning before implementing school wide. Student input was used at these revisions:
    ... 1)a narrower focus on increasing retention
    ... 2)limiting length of program to one semester junior year
  • Develop and implement process for encouraging use of the IDEA rubric for classroom instruction
  • Staff participation in this area is needed. More on this topic will be addressed at staff meetings
  • Pilot web-based year end employer survey to reduce paperwork
    -Survey will remain the same; however employers will be able to take the survey over the Internet
