JOB DESCRIPTION
DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Department: Christian Education
Classification: Part-time, Salaried Employee (annual term: August 1 – July 31)
Reports To: The Pastor and the Session
Schedule: 32 hours per month (approximately 7–8 hours per week)
PURPOSE
To provide leadership and direction to enhance Christian spiritual growth, with an emphasis on children and youth programs and activities.
REPORTS TO
To the Pastor and the Session. Monthly coordination meeting with the Pastor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Christian Education Committee Member
• Coordinate and attend activities related to Christian Education for youth.
• Form and facilitate a Parent Advisory Council.
• Provide a monthly written report to the Christian Education Committee ahead of session meetings.
Messy Church
• Direct Messy Church based programming (Wednesday, once a month) during the school year (September – May).
• Coordinate volunteer teams to provide the meal and activities each month.
• Provide, maintain, and acquire curriculum, supplies, and materials as needed.
• Evaluate the program annually with the planning team and the Christian Education Committee.
• Complete the Messy Church training provided online, and updated training as available.
Missions
• Plan quarterly mission/outreach activities to serve the local, national, or global community at Brunch Church.
Youth Social Activities (family and/or specific youth ages)
• Provide monthly Christian Education Bible study for middle school and high school aged youth throughout the year.
Compassion Camp
• Acquire Compassion Camp curriculum, materials, and supplies.
• Plan, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate a three-day program annually.
• Recruit, train, and support a co-director and volunteers as needed.
• Promote the program to the congregation and community.
Sunday School Program for Elementary (K–5th Grade)
• Plan and lead appropriate programs and classes for elementary aged children.
• Recruit, train, and support substitutes and helpers.
• Provide and maintain appropriate curriculum, materials, and supplies.
• Runs September – May, every Sunday except communion Sunday and Brunch Church.
• Hold a quarterly event for elementary children.
Nursery Supervision (ages 0–5)
• Provide and maintain appropriate curriculum, materials, and supplies.
• Supervise the Nursery Assistant:
◦ Check in before and after the worship service on Sunday mornings and at special worship services.
◦ Review attendance sign-in sheets and child information sheets.
• Schedule nursery volunteers from the congregation.
Other (determined annually by the Christian Education Committee)
• Plan and lead an annual summer camp or mission experience for middle school and high school aged youth. Includes planning transportation, attending the camp/mission with the youth, holding coordination meetings with parents and youth for fundraisers, and recruiting chaperones.
• Establish a rapport with youth of all ages.
• Support the youth at school and at extracurricular activities.
• Submit annual goals to the Personnel Committee.
Administrative Duties
• Maintain legal documentation and records regarding youth participation in activities (permission, registration, attendance records, etc.).
• Create and maintain an activity calendar.
• Communicate programming in the bulletin, monthly newsletter, and mailings as indicated.
• Maintain a digital log/record of youth attendance at activities, worship services, Bible studies, etc., and provide records to the Pastor.
• Maintain a contact list with youth names and parents, and make it accessible to the Pastor at all times.
• Submit a proposed budget to the Christian Education Committee annually and keep expenses within the budget approved by the session.
• Submit receipts and documentation as required by the church treasurer.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Education and/or experience in the area of Christian Education or a related field.
• Minimum of an associate's degree preferred.
TIME COMMITMENT
• Annual (August 1 – July 31) part-time, salaried position.
• 32 hours per month (approximately 7–8 hours per week):
◦ 1 hr/month — Meeting with the Pastor
◦ 3 hr/month — Christian Education Committee responsibilities
◦ 5 hr/month — Messy Church
◦ 1 hr/month — Missions
◦ 3 hr/month — Youth social activities
◦ 6 hr/month — Sunday School program
◦ 2 hr/month — Support the youth at school and extracurricular activities
◦ 2 hr/month — Administrative duties
◦ 12 hr/year — Compassion Camp
◦ 96 hr/year — Annual mission trip planning, attending, and leading
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary: $7,680 per year (based on $20/hr)
Benefits: Under committee review
Evaluation: Annually
Termination: 30 days' notice, unless immediate suspension is due to a disciplinary infraction
Probationary Period: 90 days
Background Check: A background check will be required


Skills

• Education and/or experience in the area of Christian Education or a related field.

• 32 hours per month (approximately 7–8 hours per week) Sunday mornings and some Wednesday evenings. other hours are flexible.
