Montgomery County Fair
Through the week of August 31-September 5, 2016 many of our members participated in the 2016 Montgomery County Junior Fair located in Dayton,
Ohio. Members exhibited a wide variety of livestock from all the barns.
 
Urban Soils CDE - County
On Thursday, September 8th the Valley
View-MVCTC FFA Chapter competed in the County Soils Career Development Event at the Sycamore Conservation Education Demonstration Farm in
Trotwood, Ohio. In this CDE, students evaluated land and soil to determine its potential for urban, home site, and other non-farm uses. Students were assessed on their general knowledge of soil science as well as the ability to locate information from soil topography maps. Additionally, students evaluated 4 soil pits to analyze soil properties and overall degree of limitations to further determine whether or not that site can be used for buildings with basements, sewage treatment systems, driveways and local roads, and/or lawns, gardens, and landscaping. The following students attended county soil judging. Tanner Cordes, Faith Eller, Ann Frazier, Anna Grant, Haley Hall, Andrew Henry, Mackenzie Hoog, Jordan Johnson, Shaianne McGlaughlin, Ryan Michael, Lane Murphy, Jacob Phelps, Clayton Simpson, Taylor Thomas, Kelsey Wight, and Mercedes Woodson. Jacob Phelps placed 2nd as in individual out of the 111 individuals the contest.
 
Urban Soils CDE - District
The top 8 individuals from our chapter competed in the District Soils CDE on September 28th in Versailles, Ohio. The team placed 3rd out of 23 teams and qualified for the state competition. Individual results are noted below. There were a total of 132 individuals competing in the district competition. Our top four individuals qualified to compete at the state contest. Jordan Johnson 5th, Ann Frazier 15th, Jacob Phelps 27th, Mercedes Woodson 31st, Haley Hall 39th, Clayton Simpson 41st, Anna Grant 64th, and Tanner Cordes 88th.
 
Urban Soils CDE State
On Saturday, October 1st four Valley View-MVCTC FFA members competed in the State Urban Soils CDE. The team placed 17th out of 43 teams. The contest was held in Fairfield County. There were a total of 156 individuals competing in the state competition. Individual placings included: Jordan Johnson 39th, Mercedes Woodson 62nd, Jacob Phelps 67th, and Ann Frazier 105th.
 
FFA Homecoming Float
On Friday, September 30th students made a homecoming float and participated in the 2016 Valley View Homecoming Parade. Members who participated include Mike Boyle, Jordan Johnson, Katy Monnig, Kyle Stiver, Bailey Degroat, Faith Eller, Taylor Thomas, Mercedes Woodson, Anna Grant, Haley Hall, Ryan Michael, Tyler Michael, Colin Johnson, Taylor Weaver, Ryan Faris, Jordan Diprete, Nikki Castle, and Ashlyn Vest. The homecoming theme this year was Candy Land.
 
OSU Farm Science Review
On Wednesday, September 21st students attended The Ohio State University's Farm Science Review. Members who attended this event included Mike Boyle, Jordan Johnson, Dalton Mathews, Katy Monnig, Taylor Thomas, and Clayton Simpson. The Ohio State University Farm Science Review is located at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in London, Ohio. This industry trip allows agricultural education students the opportunity to observe, interact and experience innovative production agriculture. The Farm Science Review is a three day show that presents agricultural products and services from over 600 commercial exhibitors in an 80-acre exhibit area to over 140,000 visitors annually. Another 600 acres of land are dedicated to field demonstrations for combines, tillage, nutrient application, and drainage installation. The 67-acre Gwynne Conservation area provides hands-on education for natural resources management practices. For more information about the Farm Science Review, visit www.fsr.osu.edu .
 
FFA Fall Fundraiser
The Valley View-MVCTC FFA Chapter began its fall fundraiser on October 13th and the sale will run until November 11th. Products will be arriving during the first week of December. The purpose of our fall fundraiser is to raise money to support the involvement of the 44 FFA chapter members in various activities. Such activities include chapter meetings, Career Development Events, chapter banquet, state and national convention, camp, and many other chapter leadership activities. This year, our chapter is using four vendors for our fall fundraiser: Florida Farm Bureau – citrus fruit, pears, pineapple, and gourmet nuts; Ohio Apples – apples; Pearl Valley Cheese – cheese; and Ohio Signature Beef – beef sticks, jerky and summer sausage. For more information about the FFA Fall Fundraiser, please contact FFA advisor, Mrs. Lindsay Griffin at lindsay.griffin@valleyview.k12.oh.us or 937.855.4116, extension 219.
 
National FFA Convention
This month, twelve Valley View-MVCTC FFA members attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN from October 19th-22nd. Members attending included Mike Boyle, Tanner Cordes, Faith Eller, Anna Grant, Mackenzie Hoog, Katy Monnig, Jordan Johnson, Jacob Phelps, Taylor Thomas, Clayton Simpson, Kelsey Wight, and Mercedes Woodson. The National FFA Convention and Expo is a once-a-year opportunity for FFA members nationwide to come together and celebrate their collective accomplishments. It’s also a tremendous opportunity to engage the very first line of the FFA Motto, “Learning to Do”. Students took part in various opportunities such as agricultural industry tours with Farmworld Publications, Tuttle Orchards and Elanco. Students visited Conner Prairie Interactive History Park and attend the Cinch World’s Toughest Rodeo. Students attended convention sessions each day and observed member success at the student, chapter and community levels. We were excited to see our very own recent VVHS graduates, Sarah Landis and Tyler White receive their American FFA Degree. This convention and expo offered motivational keynote speakers and fulfilling leadership workshops. Students also had the opportunity to network with agricultural companies and colleges.

Job Interview CDE
District - Tuesday, November 8th - AFTER SCHOOL
The Ohio Job Interview CDE is designed for FFA members to practice and demonstrate the skills needed in seeking employment in all areas of agriculture. Each part of this event simulates real world experiences that students will have when seeking employment in the future. FFA Official Dress is required for this CDE. 
 
Food Science Technology CDE
Online Exam - Wednesday, November 2nd - AFTER SCHOOL
District - Wednesday, November 16th - AFTER SCHOOL
To stimulate learning activities in food science and technology related to the food industry and to assist students in developing a good working knowledge of sound principles used in a team decision-making process.
 
Parliamentary Procedure CDE
Sub-District - Thursday, November 17th AFTER SCHOOL
The Advanced Parliamentary Procedure CDE is an assessment of students’ abilities to participate effectively in a business meeting or other group decision making situations. Official dress is required for this CDE. 

Operation Christmas Child
During the month of November, the Valley View-MVCTC FFA will be collecting items for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a project of the international relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse. The Operation Christmas Child gift boxes are shipped outside of the United States to children
affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the United States. November 14-21, 2016 is the national collection week. All items must fit in a in an average-size cardboard or plastic shoebox. First, decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or boy and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Then add fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies, which
are further described below.
  • Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as toy cars, yo-yos, jump ropes,balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.
  • School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
  • Non-liquid Hygiene Items: toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths, etc.
  • Accessories: T-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries), etc.
  • Crafts: Make your own items such as hair bows, finger puppets, and friendship bracelets. Download instructions here.
  • A Personal Note: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself, your family, or group.  If you include your name and an address, the child may be able to write back. 

If you would like to contribute items for an Operation Christmas Child gift box, please deliver them to the
high school ag room by November 16, 2016.
