The 2014 theme was “Sail Away with FFA Camp.” During the week members also participated in various sports tournaments involving softball, sand volleyball, basketball, tetherball, horse shoes, ping pong, and corn hole. Additional competitions included group presentations on recycling, reciting of the FFA Camp Creed, rifle, shotgun, and archery. Each morning, before breakfast, campers had the opportunity to plunge into the lake or take a sunrise walk.

During the first day members met fellow members in their camp fleet, camp rules, and participated in a dance. The day ended with a campfire reflecting of opportunities at camp.

The second day included team building activities, high ropes for senior members, a patriotic workshop and team building workshop by the State FFA Officers. The highlight of Tuesday was a scavenger hunt activity. The day ended with a campfire challenging campers to work together as a team.

On Wednesday, members rotated through various environmentally-related workshops including bird watching, tree identification, recycling, and more. Miami East FFA member Daniel Everett participated in the talent show with a vocal presentation. Senior campers hosted residents of The Farm, a Carroll County adult mentally handicap program to a morning of games and socializing. Miami East FFA donated $515 to Children’s Hospital in a Live Auction and will receive a chapter visit by the 2015-16 State FFA President Matthew Klopfenstein from Wayne Trace High School in Paulding County. The day ended with a campfire challenging campers to take advantage of every opportunity at camp.

Thursday gave campers the opportunity to attend workshops on canoeing and kayaking and line dancing. Some chose to attend workshops on career opportunities and making college-related decisions. The afternoon included water-related games. Following the speaking finals members heard the message of a Shawnee Indian, Wehyepihehrsehnhwah, who shared stories of the land and the Native American people. Members found his message inspiring and uplifting. Following the guest speaker, members participated in a dance. The evening ended with a slideshow of the week and a life-challenge by the State FFA Officers.

Results of the week proved that Miami East-MVCTC FFA members have many talents. Emily Thimmes placed first in the FFA Creed Speaking Contest. Haley Etherington and her camp fleet placed first in the Debate Competition. The debate topic was, “The Causes of Poor Water Quality.” Both members received a special memento from FFA Camp.

The week ended with a Friday morning cleaning of camp and a send-off by the State FFA Officers. Members returned home via school bus and would like to thank the Milton-Union-MVCTC FFA members for sharing the bus.

FFA Camp Muskingum is located on Leesville Lake and is owned and operated by the Ohio FFA Association. A special appreciation goes to the Miami Valley Career Technology Center and the Miami East FFA Alumni Chapter for their financial support of those attending camp.
