MVCTC Alumni Success Story - Logan Bowers Computer Programming & Web Applications Class of 2019 from National Trail.

Logan earned his associate's degree in Computer Information Systems/Software Development from Sinclair College. He is employed at the Golden Living Center.

How did MCJVS/MVCTC help you to be successful?
"Upon graduating MVCTC, I became a full-time college student at Sinclair College while working a part-time job. After my first semester, I was accepted to an internship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for the spring 2020 semester. I moved to a suburb of Washington D.C. for my internship. I acquired new skills while developing a real, useful web application technology resource for software engineers at NASA. The skills I picked up to create the web application successfully served as a near-perfect extension of what I learned while still in high school, thanks to MVCTC. In addition, I learned new technologies, including web frameworks, more advanced database skills, and more. I completed my degree, and now I am currently employed in an Office Support position. I plan to transfer to a four-year university in the coming year to major in Computer Science, and beyond that, I will continue to pursue opportunities with NASA.

Thanks to the incredible education at MVCTC, I was gifted with many unique professional opportunities which had seemed almost unheard of to a high school student. With the dependably enthusiastic, patient, and professional help of my instructor, Mrs. Melissa Goodall, I built vital skill and concept foundations in programming languages such as C++ and Java, as well as web development technologies, databases, and more. My career tech program provided enriching assignments presented in such a way that promoted our learning and growth as high school students. It is no secret there is a challenging learning curve with computer programming, especially to students at the level that we were, but this class made the path to making it 'click' very efficient and smooth.

In my senior year at MVCTC, our class coordinated with NASA HUNCH to compete in a team-based exercise of our skills, developing a functional 'Mission Crew Reminder Tool' application in a nationwide contest. Two of the teams in our class were selected to present our projects at Johnson Space Center in Houston in front of a Saturn V Rocket to real NASA engineers and the public. I was fortunate enough to have led one of those teams and see our success through to the end. This incredible opportunity would spark a realization in all of us of just how possible our aspirations might be. Furthermore, it would serve me personally in securing a NASA internship.

The skills and experience that I received from my years at MVCTC were essential for hitting the ground running with my career and preparing me for education post-high school. On top of having in-class learning exercises, we were also introduced to college-level work and received multiple college credits through our in-class work. MVCTC's Business Professionals of America (BPA) involvement was also beneficial for my professional development, from good business practices to dress code in the workplace. I was able to compete in regional and state programming competitions through BPA, which I feel even better prepared me for the responsibilities of leading a team through NASA HUNCH and being successful competitively.

I am very fortunate to have been able to attend MVCTC during my junior and senior years of high school, and I continue to recommend it even now. I encourage others who know a young learner with a passion for pursuing a field to get them involved and understand all of the paths that MVCTC offers. In retrospect, it was one of the best decisions I ever made."
