Richard Huynh, 2017 Dental Assisting from Northridge

10/23/2017

My name is Richard Huynh and I am a Northridge and Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Alumni. I was raised by my parents who both immigrated to the United States to begin a new chapter in their lives. This makes me a second-generation Vietnamese American. I spent the past twelve years of my youth living in Northridge in Dayton, Ohio.

My program at MVCTC was their Dental Assistant (DA). I chose this to get a first look of what the dental field would be like and to see if I wanted to spend the rest of my life in this profession. My first day of junior year at MVCTC was difficult, I had little to no friends because about a quarter of my graduating classmates and friends chose to attend MVCTC with me but none were in any of my classes. MVCTC, being partnered with twenty-seven other schools, had a large campus and was a new game to me. I was shy and hesitant to speak with fellow classmates. After a few weeks of settling in, I was able to form friendships that are still strong today from not just my fellow peers, but also the staff.

At MVCTC, I was a part of SkillsUSA and a Student Ambassador and was still able to be connected to my home school’s clubs. The extra-curriculars at MVCTC helped me break from my shell of shyness and awkwardness by getting to meet the many people involved in these organizations. MVCTC gave me the opportunity to visit Wright Patterson Air Force Base to shadow their dental clinic, which inspired me even more to continue my education to become a dentist. After attending MVCTC, I realized how much the faculty and students there assisted me in shaping who I am today. I learned to meet new people, was able to volunteer for service activities, and most importantly it helped me assure myself of my passion, becoming a dentist.

I am now currently attending The Ohio State University (OSU) to continue my education and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Biology. With that, I plan on attending OSU’s School of Dentistry to pursue my passion of becoming a Dentist. Since the extra-curriculars at MVCTC helped shape the person I am today, I have decided to partake in several of OSU’s extra-curriculars to continue to help others to stay true to who they are. O-H…..I-O!!
