Troy, Ohio – The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Veterinary Science senior class took two trips to Idle Hours Ranch in Troy Ohio. One on October 26th were they did a work day and one on November 2nd to tour their animal facilities.

Idle Hours Ranch is a private, family-operated facility focused on animal care, family fun, and interactive education. The Iddings family have been dedicated to farming and animal husbandry for over seven generations. Currently they have over 200 total animals and over 45 species. Animals that they care for include red foxes, a mountain lion, river otters, llamas, kangaroos, wallabies, wolves, emu, camels, yak, a fallow deer, tortoise, coyotes, a mollucan cockatoo and many more exciting animals.

During the seniors first trip there. They help vaccinate and hoof trim their many goats and sheep that they use for their petting zoo. They vaccinated for tetanus, over eating, and did deworming. During their second tip, they were taken on a tour of the facilities by Brian Iddings. He showed the seniors their many animal species and explained many facts about each one. Many facts were about the animals’ behavior, habitat, physical appearance, and instincts. Brian also explained about how people can volunteer and internship at their facilities.

It was a very educational experience for the senior veterinary science class. They practice their veterinary skills and learned about animals that some of them will work with in the near future. They even have the opportunity to gain more experience by volunteering or interning at Idle Hours Ranch. Below are some comments from the seniors.

“Going to Idle Hours Ranch was such a great experience. I learned about various types of animals including prairie dogs and camels. I got an amazing opportunity to hold a skunk and pet a baby wallaby. Overall my experience at Idle Hours Ranch was extraordinary.” Kate Bieri, Senior, Miamisburg

“I thought it was really interesting that out of all the exotics, the cougar enclosure was the only one that people couldn’t enter.” Julia Richardson, Senior, West Carrolton
