MVCTC AG Livestock Production Program All-Hands-On-Deck
Englewood, Ohio -- Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Agriculture and Livestock Production students have a classroom that extends well beyond desks, hallways, and classrooms. The outdoor learning lab consists of over 65 acres of land that the students help to farm and maintain.
Senior Alexis Tomlin (Bethel High School) stated, “We are excited for our upcoming harvest. We have over 65 acres that we farm including sorghum, beans, corn, hay, and wheat.” Senior Nicole Miller (Northmont High School) touched on the value of a diversified education and hands-on learning experiences. She stated, “I like that our lab is multi-dimensional in that we have a variety of hands-on learning opportunities from agronomy to livestock selection and management.” Senior Jacob Keoper (Versailles High School) is looking forward to cutting up to five acres of sorghum in the near future. Jacob stated, “I have enjoyed learning and working in this type of hands-on environment.” Program instructor Bill Hershberger can be found working collaboratively with students each day to maintain the animals, equipment, and farm land at MVCTC while providing an enriching learning experience.
Agriculture and Livestock Production at MVCTC introduces students to the modern world of agriculture. Students gain experiences and become involved in managing the resources and technologies that are both required and needed to obtain employment or to go on to higher education in agriculture.
Students are involved with the management and operation of a fully functioning 65-acre crop and livestock farm. Students will learn to use modern technologies in yield monitoring and soil mapping to manage resources most efficiently. Livestock is also a large part of what is taught at MVCTC; we have facilities for a small cow/calf operation as well as a small swine/farrow to finish operation where students will learn the proper care and handling of these large animal species, and how-to manage the resources needed to run a livestock operation. Students are also able to compete in a wide range of FFA career development and leadership activities.
MVCTC is one of the largest provider of Agriculture Education in the state of Ohio, offering six on campus Agriculture programs to juniors and seniors. Plus, MVCTC offers satellite agriculture education programs at 12 partner school districts throughout the Miami Valley.
