MVCTC Animal Care and Management Team Brings Home Win

Englewood, Ohio –The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Senior Animal Care and Management lab participated in the state FFA Aquarium Management CDE contest at the Ohio State Fairgrounds on April 18, 2018. Out of 12 teams, the seniors placed first in the state with 2nd place individual by Jacob Johnson (West Carrollton) and 4th place individual Cody Matchett (Mississinawa Valley). 

 

The Aquarium Management CDE is designed to evaluate student’s knowledge of fish-keeping trends and practical application of skills in the Aquarium Industry.  Students took a 75 question written multiple choice test over various aspects of the aquarium industry such as anatomy, nutrition, disease, selecting equipment, breeding, troubleshooting and routine maintenance to name a few. 

 

This contest also involved an identification portion including fresh and salt water breeds, aquarium plants, equipment, disease, and foods. The final portion of this contest was the practicum part that involved water testing, equipment use, troubleshooting, catching and bagging a fish are just a few of the skills these students are asked to demonstrate.  This is a first time for students to win the state Aquarium Contest in over 18 years!
