11/23/2020

Englewood, Ohio – Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) senior Bethany Weldy was named one of five finalists from Ohio for the U.S. Presidential Scholar Program. Bethany is currently attending the MVCTC Pre-Nursing program. Her school district is Covington Exempted Village Schools. Bethany is the daughter of Dr. Nick and Becky Weldy of Covington, Ohio.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. The ODE State Superintendent selected five Ohio CTE students as semi-finalists for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program CTE category, and 20 finalists will be honored nationwide this spring for their achievements and accomplishments in career-tech education.

Bethany is a very driven young lady. While attending Covington High School and the Miami Valley Career Technology Center, she has participated in the National Honor Society, Key Club, Spanish Club, Covington Band, American Sign Language Club, Covington-UVCC FFA Secretary, and played on both the Softball and Volleyball teams all four years.  While at MVCTC, she has served as an MVCTC Student Ambassador and has been the MVCTC Junior Chapter HOSA President and the Senior Chapter HOSA President. Bethany also has been very involved in 4-H, serving as the Ears to Tails 4-H Club Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice-President.

Bethany is very involved in volunteering and has been an active member of the Positive, Leader, Uplifting, and Supportive (PLUS) organization through Covington Schools.  She has volunteered in the past with the Northmont Rotary Annual Charity Auction and was one of five students in Ohio selected to participate in the United Planet Virtual Exchange American-Iraqi Public Health Teams Addressing COVID-19 Project.

Bethany began taking College Credit Plus classes at the age of 13. After three years of hard work, she was the youngest student to graduate with an Associate degree at Covington and MVCTC.  Bethany officially graduated from Sinclair Community College with her Associate of Liberal Arts Degree and High Honors in August of 2020. She is currently enrolled in American Sign Language (ASL) and plans to become an ASL translator as part of her nursing career. When Bethany graduates high school in May 2021, she will have earned more than 100 college credit hours.

After completing the MVCTC Pre-Nursing program and graduating from Covington, Bethany will be attending Sinclair's Nursing Program to become a Registered Nurse. Then she plans to go to The Ohio State University for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with aspirations to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) either from the University of Cincinnati or Otterbein University.
