Exploring Typography and Desktop Publishing: The Junior Media and Video Production Lab's Billboard Trip

10/24/2023

Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Media & Video Production students have been given a unique opportunity to delve into the world of media, typography, and desktop publishing. On Monday, October 23rd, the junior lab embarked on an exciting adventure: the famous Billboard trip. This trip, now in its 20th annual edition, aimed to provide students with a practical and immersive experience in the world of typography and desktop publishing.

A Week of Typography and Desktop Publishing

The journey began the previous week, during the week of October 16th when students in the Media and Video Production Lab started a new unit on typography and desktop publishing. This unit was designed to introduce students to the power of visual communication through text and images. Typography, the art and technique of arranging type to make written language readable and appealing, is a crucial aspect of graphic design and media production. In this age of digital media, understanding typography is more important than ever.

On the other hand, desktop publishing involves using software to create visually appealing documents, such as brochures, posters, and magazines. It brings together text, images, and design elements to craft compelling and professional materials. During the unit, students learned the fundamentals of typography, graphic design principles, and desktop publishing tools. They practiced creating visually appealing layouts and developing a keen eye for design.

The 20th Annual Billboard Fieldtrip

On October 23rd, the culmination of this unit unfolded as the junior Media and Video Production Lab set off on their Billboard trip. The trip was designed to provide students with real-world exposure to the applications of typography and desktop publishing. As the bus journeyed along the highways of I-70 and I-75, students had worksheets in hand to fill out, making the most of the live billboard displays. These worksheets encouraged them to analyze the use of typography and design elements in the billboards they encountered. It was a hands-on experience that allowed them to put their newly acquired knowledge to the test.

The trip included stopping to speak with Sam Newman at Smartcast Media. Sam is not only an advisory committee member for the Media and Video Production Lab but also an MVP graduate of the class of 2011.
