03/01/2024

On Saturday, February 24, students from the Drones & GIS Technologies program at Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) showcased their skills and expertise at the REC Aerial Drone Competition hosted by Greene County Career Center. This marked the program's debut in the competition, with two teams demonstrating exceptional performance across various mission challenges.

The REC Aerial Drone Competition comprised four distinct mission competitions: Piloting Skills, Autonomous Piloting Skills (programming), Teamwork, and Communication. The participating teams, equipped with cutting-edge course equipment and drones acquired through a generous grant from the REC Foundation earlier this year, demonstrated their capabilities with precision and proficiency.

Representing the Drones & GIS Technologies program were Avi Schuman (Brookville), Isaiah Ares (Tipp City), James McElroy (Twin Valley South), Khalil Hood (Northmont), and Jayden Gambrel (Horizon Science Academy). The team, composed of Avi, Isaiah, and James, showcased exceptional teamwork and skill, advancing to the semi-finals in the Teamwork Mission.

Amy Sugden, instructor of the Drones & GIS Technologies program at MVCTC, expressed her pride in the students' accomplishments, stating, "This competition allowed us to apply flight, communication, and teamwork skills essential to a drone/UAS field career. It's gratifying to see our students excel in such a competitive environment."
