Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter Donates Meat to Family Abuse Shelter

09/09/2014

The Family Abuse Shelter of Miami County is a non-profit shelter for men, women, and children. They operate based completely on grants and donations from the community. According to Fawnda Cress, grant coordinator, “We rarely receive donations of fresh meat so this is a real treat.”

Three Miami East-MVCTC FFA members, Eliza Hershberger, Hannah Davis, and Katie Bendickson each raised groups of chickens for six weeks before they were butchered at King and Son’s Poultry Services, Bradford. King and Sons processed the chickens at a reduced cost.

The Miami East-MVCTC FFA chapter in Casstown, Ohio was awarded a $3,000.00 grant as part of the Rural Youth Development program. The nationwide program provides grant money to rural FFA chapters, in communities under 10,000, to support year-long, service-learning projects that address local needs. The Miami East-MVCTC FFA chapter was selected to participate in a special year-long Cohort focused on addressing hunger.
