MVCTC Partnering with Montgomery County for Workforce Development Initiative
Montgomery County, Ohio (September 1, 2015) – Montgomery County’s Workforce Division has secured over $2.7 million in federal and state funding to strengthen and expand its workforce development efforts in several sectors including manufacturing, logistics and transportation.
The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded Montgomery County the largest share in Ohio, $2.4 million in Workforce Investment Act (WIA) National Emergency Grant (NEG) funding. The funds awarded will build on strategies focused on industry-specific workforce and economic development that align job-training programs to meet those needs of a local or regional labor market.
In addition, Montgomery County received $400,000 in state funding ($200,000 from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Office of Workforce Development and $200,000 from the AREA 7 Workforce Investment Board) in support of Fuyao for on-the-job training, hiring events and business services. Fuyao Glass America Inc. will nearly double the amount of jobs originally promised at the former General Motors plant in Moraine and plans to hire 1,550 workers and invest a total of $360 million in the site.
“This funding is a tremendous validation of our substantial efforts to invest in people and provide the training and skills they need for in-demand jobs,” said Montgomery County Commission President Debbie Lieberman. “The state and federal governments recognize that our innovative sector strategies and effective partnerships with the business and education communities provide incredible value to preparing our citizens for high-demand jobs.”
Over 1,000 Montgomery County residents will be instructed with individualized training by local education partners (Sinclair Community College, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, etc.) and with Project Hire, an On the Job Training (OJT) Program. Additionally, employers will benefit from career placement services, skills assessments, and background checks of potential job candidates.
This funding complements the County’s strategy to align its Workforce Development Division (OhioMeansJobs | Montgomery County) and its Economic Development Department in order to expand the talent pipeline for Montgomery County’s most urgent workforce needs. The County will continue to work with manufacturing, transportation and logistics employers and education/training providers to ensure the curriculum created meets their needs. The funds will also be used to develop outreach materials for businesses in targeted sectors and dislocated workers.
