The Teacher Academy is a senior-only program that provides students a first-hand experience in what it is like to be a teacher. The students will have many opportunities to engage themselves in the role of a teacher. The students have a choice whether they would like to be a full-time student (take academics in the morning/lab in the afternoon) OR they can choose to be a half-day student (take their academics at their partner school in the morning and the MVCTC lab in the afternoon). Students in this program participate in off-campus school internships.
Students in the Teacher Academy program will have many opportunities to work with all age levels of children. During the school year, the students are assigned placements at various schools two afternoons a week. The students will work at the following placements: Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Adolescent/Young Adult, Special Needs, and a Diversity internship. The students are also Miami Valley READS trained and they tutor elementary children each Friday.
In this program they will study the development of children, lesson planning, classroom management, roles of teachers, classroom environment, multiple intelligences, Blooms Taxonomy, rubric making, and bulletin board design to name just a few.
Each week the students plan and teach mini lessons to their classmates. This activity has become a favorite for the students. They also participate in the Future Educators Association(FEA) organization, educational field trips, tour a college campus, and sit in on a college class. The students also prepare a Praxis III Portfolio that can possibly earn them articulated college credit. All of these experiences give the student a "jump-start" into their future as a teacher!
Many Teacher Academy students continue on to either a 2-year or a 4-year college institution to become a teacher. However, some decide to work in a daycare after leaving high school.
