Program of the Week - Retail Agriculture Services

The Retail Agriculture Services program teaches plant production, maintenance, hydroponics, service, processing, customer relations, and sales. Students learn about careers and skills needed for horticulture and landscape by designing and maintaining landscape areas on the school campus. The program operates a greenhouse and flower shop, producing, processing, marketing, and selling greenhouse crops. Students also learn customer service, retail sales experience, floral shop, plant production, propagation, greenhouse and garden center operation. Students also learn valuable life skills that are necessary in the workplace.

Students in the Retail Agriculture Services program are members of the National FFA Organization, a student organization that promotes premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. FFA allows students to learn teamwork and positive social skills.

Students are taught various workplace skills such as public speaking, job interviewing, organizing, and record-keeping through the AET online system.

Students in this program go on to pursue careers that provide a service in the agriculture industry. Many decide to work for local greenhouses, flower shops, parks, or landscape businesses.

Program Instructor - Mrs. Eva Wiley

Mrs. Wiley started teaching at MVCTC 19 years ago.  

"My favorite part of being an instructor is working with my students on projects they can take from seed to sale," shared Mrs. Wiley.

"I want potential students to know that the Retail Ag Services course is a program where students will learn greenhouse management, floral design, landscape maintenance as well as leadership skills, teamwork and work ethic needed to be successful in today's job market."

FFA

Students in the Retail Agriculture Services Program participate in the Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) FFA. 

FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success.

Members are future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers and premier professionals in many career fields.
